Privacy Policy
Last Updated: 2026-08-28
SpeakBand ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use it, and who we share it with when you use our mobile application ("App") and related services.
1. Information We Collect
Information You Provide to Us
- Account Information: We collect your email address. If you register with a password, we store it only as a salted one-way hash (bcrypt) — we never store your password itself. If you sign in with Google, we receive only your verified email address from Google; we do not collect your name or profile picture.
- Practice Audio: When you practice speaking, your voice recording is transmitted to us for transcription. We do not store your audio recordings. Audio is held in memory only for as long as it takes to transcribe it, then discarded.
- Practice Content and Progress: We store the transcribed text of your answers, the AI feedback and scores generated for them, and your progress metrics, so that you can review your history.
- Your Practice Goal: We store which exam you tell us you are preparing for, so we can give you the right questions and score you on the right scale. If you choose an exam we do not support yet, we still record that choice — counted together with everyone else's, it is how we decide which exam to add next. It is a single preference, it is never shared, and deleting your account deletes it.
- Your Exam Date: If you tell us when your exam is, we store that date so the app can show how long you have left and so we can say something useful to you in the last week before it. It is optional, you can change or remove it at any time in the app, and deleting your account deletes it.
- Questions You Write: If you write your own practice questions, we store their text so you can practise, edit and delete them. They are private to your account and are never shown to anyone else.
- Documents You Upload: If you upload a PDF to practise from, you choose which two pages of it we may read, before the file is sent. We read the text of those two pages and we do not keep the file: the PDF is discarded as soon as the text has been taken out of it, and no other page is read. We store that extracted text — capped at 8,000 characters — together with the file's name and the page numbers you chose, so the app can list the document and write practice questions from it. The text is private to your account, it is never shown to anyone else, and deleting the document or your account deletes it. We never open, run or follow anything inside an uploaded file.
- Pages That Are Scans: If those two pages turn out to be a photocopy — a picture of a page, with no text in it to read — the app can, only if you choose to, draw those two pages as images on your phone and send them instead. Those images are sent to Google's Gemini API to have the words read off them, and we keep only the resulting text, exactly as above. The images themselves are not stored, by us or by the app, and no page other than the two you chose is ever drawn or sent.
Information We Collect Automatically
- Server Logs: Our servers record technical information such as request timestamps, endpoints accessed, and a per-request trace identifier, for reliability and abuse prevention.
- Service Usage Records: For each AI request made on your behalf we record the feature used, the provider and model, and the amount of processing consumed (for example the number of text units, or the approximate length of an audio clip). These records contain no part of your answers, your audio, or the feedback you received. We use them to manage costs and capacity.
- Installation Identifier: The app generates a random identifier for its own installation and sends it with requests. We store it against your free first day so that one phone cannot claim the free day again and again under new accounts. It is not the Android device ID, the advertising ID, or any identifier assigned by your phone or by Google; it is a random value we generate, it tells us nothing about your device or about you, and reinstalling the app produces a new one.
We do not use third-party analytics or crash-reporting SDKs, and we do not collect advertising IDs or any identifier assigned to your device by its manufacturer or operating system.
2. How We Use Your Information
- To provide and improve the App's core functionality — transcribing your speech and evaluating it.
- To personalize your learning experience and track your progress over time.
- To decide which exams to support next, from the goals our users have chosen, counted in aggregate.
- To enforce usage limits and subscription entitlements.
- To diagnose errors and protect the service from abuse.
We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not sell it.
3. How We Share Your Information
We do not sell your personal data. We share it only with the service providers below, and only to the extent needed to operate the App:

We may also disclose information if required by law or in response to a valid request by a public authority.
4. Payments
Subscriptions are sold through Google Play, with entitlements managed by RevenueCat. Your payment card details are handled entirely by Google and never reach our servers. We receive only the fact of a purchase, its product identifier, price, and transaction identifier.
5. Third-Party AI Services
To transcribe and evaluate your speaking, we send your audio to Google's Gemini API (or Groq, or OpenAI, as fallbacks) and the resulting text to Anthropic. These providers process the data solely to return a result to us. Under our agreements with them, these providers do not use your data to train their models.
6. Data Retention and Deletion
We retain your account, practice history, and progress data for as long as your account exists. Audio is never retained, and neither is an uploaded file nor any image of its pages — only the text of the two pages you chose, which you can delete in the app at any time.
You can delete your account and its data at any time, either in the app (Settings → Delete account, which erases it immediately) or by emailing us at the address in Section 11, in which case we will action the request within 30 days. Full details: Delete Your Account.
Service usage records (Section 1) are kept for up to 90 days in detailed form, after which they are aggregated into totals that identify no one.
After deletion we retain records of purchases (amount, date, transaction identifier) with the link to your account removed, so they no longer identify you. We are required to keep financial records for accounting and tax purposes. Service usage records are likewise kept with the link to your account removed.
7. Data Security
We protect your data in transit with HTTPS, store passwords only as bcrypt hashes, and restrict database access to the application. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
8. Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information, to object to or restrict its processing, and to withdraw consent where we relied on it. To exercise these rights, contact us at the address below.
9. Children's Privacy
The App is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
10. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the new policy at this URL and update the "Last Updated" date above.
